It's not a weapon, and if you used it as such, it would be treated as an improvised weapon. So yeah, I don't see how Dueling is affected when you have a shield. You can make an attack with anything in your off-hand, but as an improvised weapon you do not get proficiency bonus and is relegated to at best a d4 (dependent on size) without any modifiers damage.Ī dagger is explicitly said to be a weapon, and if you have the proper fighting style, two weapon fighting is optimal action to take. Shields are not explicitly referred to or fall under the category as "weapon".
